Unidirectional Carbon Fiber Ribbon for FRP Systems


CARBOFILL is a standard carbon fibre ribbon featuring high unidirectional resistance, that once impregnated with specific products from the NORPHEN CARBO range gives rise to a composite material with very high mechanical properties (higher than steel), particularly suited to reinforce construction elements made of concrete, brick or wood.

Usage field

CARBOFILL is best used as a light material replacing traditional reinforcement systems.

It can be used:

  • as an alternative to steel H-girders to reinforce beams;
  • to increase the bearing capacity of floors when there is a change in building plans;
  • to improve the bearing capacity of vaults (even brick ones);
  • whenever the rigidity of an artefact and its resistance should be increased;
  • to boost a structure bearing capacity and its resistance to any kind of stress;
  • to increase the resistance to corrosion, frost, carbonation and concrete structures chlorides.

The substrate must be carefully examined to make sure it is a suitable and structurally sound base, and a proper preparation method must be chosen, according to surface conditions.


Standard Work Stages for Concrete Elements

  • Scarifying shall be accomplished to remove all existing deteriorated concrete parts, until obtaining a healthy and cohesive substrate, and to free any rusted reinforcing bars.
  • Oxidized rebars must be brushed, cleaned and then treated with CEM- OX passivating grout. Any reinforcement integration should be decided by the Structural Designer.
  • Any concrete surface shall undergo pressure washing before the repair mortar is applied.
  • Concrete sections made with a shrinkage compensated fiber-reinforced cementitious grout (that is to say NORDGROUTH TIXO, GROVE RIPRISTINO or GROVE RAPIDO), shall be recontructed over a clean, water saturated substrate.
  • If a subsequent carbon fiber reinforcement cycle is scheduled, it is best practice, during the concrete sections reconstruction, to round both edges and corners and try to obtain a smooth surface applying, if needed, a GROVE RASANTE cementitious shaving coat.
  • All surfaces must undergo a wet curing process for at least 24-48 hours.


Once the surface is restored and smoothened follow these instructions:

  1. apply a NORPHEN CARBO FONDO anchoring base coat with either a roller or a brush;
  2. wet on wet, apply a NORPHEN CARBO STUCCO skim coat, with a spatula, in order to close all pores and get a smooth surface. Using the same product, all edges shall be rounded off and corners filleted in order to allow a proper installation of the subsequent CARBOFILL texture layer. This work will take on more or less importance depending on the level of finish quality obtained by reconstructing the abovementioned sections with any cementitious grout;
  3. wet on wet, apply "CARBOFILL" carbon texture and saturate it by rolling over multiple coats of NORPHEN CARBO BASE. CARBOFILL carbon texture strips must be parallel to the stress lines of the structural element to be reinforced. Overlapping is only recommended along 10-15 cm of the length of the carbon texture strip. In case of multilayered applications, the overlapping of single carbon strips shall be staggered;
  4. for an easier application, we recommend using 10 cm or 20 cm wide strips;
  5. to allow to subsequent finish coating with cementitious materials, it is advisable to broadcast 0.3 to 0.9 mm quartz onto the surface of the carbon texture once it is fully saturated with resin.


The applied carbon texture can be coated with TIPEWALL, a two-component, polyurethane and UV-resistant resin paint, available in RAL colors.
