Solvent Based Fixative Liquid Primer


PRIMER PLS is a very fluid solvent based consolidant base coat based on thermoplastic acrylic copolymers.

Due to its excellent fluidity, PRIMER PLS is capable of penetrating even capillary micro-porosities of building surfaces exerting both a substantial strengthening and an anti-chalking effect.

The particular chemical nature of PRIMER PLS allows it to cure even at very low temperatures and with high values ​​of relative humidity.

Once fully cured PRIMER PLS transforms treated surfaces into a stable and uniformly absorbent, cohesive excellent substrate ready for the subsequent treatment with either acrylic or acryl-siloxane paints or acryl based liquid membranes protecting them from the effects of the typical alkalinity of cementitious or similar substrates.

Compared to other similar products available on the market, PRIMER PLS is almost odorless and is suitable for use both indoors and outdoors (providing adequate ventilation).

PRIMER PLS can also be applied to already coated or painted surfaces. If the coating is stable, PRIMER PLS acts as a consolidating and anti-chalking agent, if the coating is weak or non-adherent to the surface PRIMER PLS facilitates the removal of loose parts.

Usage field

PRIMER PLS is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use and can be applied to:

  1. new subsrates: to eliminate the typical cement and lime based products alkalinity negative effects and to obtain uniform surface absorption;
  2. old substrates: to improve the anchorage of finishing coatings (paint or membranes), consolidate or remove all chalking or poorly cohesive treatments and make the absorption uniform in the case of patched surfaces or made of different materials.

PRIMER PLS can be applied to:

  • precast concrete;
  • gypsum and plasterboard;
  • lime plaster skim coats;
  • previously painted plaster;
  • repaired or patched old surfaces;
  • porous stone material;
  • brick porous material;
  • organic or mineral old coatings.

A. Substrate Preparation

General recommendations (for all surfaces):

  • the product should not be applied to surfaces with a moisture content greater than 5.5% (carbide method according to UNI 10329) or with obvious phenomena of efflorescence salt;
  • loose bodies or incoherent layers must first be removed by mechanical means (scrapers, sandpaper, abrasive brush, grinder, sander, etc ...);
  • layers or residues of either lime or tempera based paints must be completely removed;
  • traces of oils, fats and waxes (including release agents) must be completely removed;
  • in the case of areas affected by mold, remove it with a specific treatment based on sodium hypochlorite and treat the surface with AM PRIMER (see Technical Data Sheet for instructions for use);
  • allow new plaster to cure for at least 3-4 weeks in order to stabilize both humidity and carbonation levels.

Surfaces made of either plaster or gypsum or plasterboards:

  • if necessary proceed with either skim coating or filling the surface with specific products.The slab-wall joints can be sealed with an acrylic mastic;
  • following final sanding, remove the dust by suction;
  • the surface area is now ready to receive PRIMER PLS.

Concrete Surfaces:

  • remove poorly cohesive concrete (usually resulting from possible formworks inaccurate setup);
  • brush and treat all rods and exposed reinforcement parts with CEM-OX (passivating grout);
  • repair the missing parts of the structure with GROVE RIPRISTINO, anti-shrinkage, thixotropic fibered mortar and skim coat the surface with GRAVE RASANTE, anti-shrinkage skim coat;
  • After concrete repair products are fully cured, the surface will be ready to receive PRIMER PLS.

B. Application of the product:

Methods of application

  • Homogenize the product before use by shaking the container for a few seconds before withdrawing.
  • The product is ready to use but can be diluted if necessary (see "very absorbent surfaces and dilution" for more information).Do not adulterate the product by adding extraneous materials and preparations.
  • PRIMER PLS can be applied with different methods both manuallly and by spray

Roller or Brush

  • for roller application, a solvent resistant short or medium haired tool should be chosen ;
  • properly laying PRIMER PLS with a roller allows reaching a maximum consumption of 0.3 liters / m 2;
  • keep in mind that the degree of consolidation of the treated area depends on the amount of PRIMER PLS being applied: the more you insist applying the product passing over either the roller or the brush, the more the product penetrates reaching a depth even equal to the whole thickness of the substrate.Obviously, it is up to the applicator to assess whether the consolidating effect of PRIMER PLS adversely affects the transpiration of the system or not.

Sprayer (airless)

  • follow the methods traditionally used for the airless spraying;
  • we suggest the spray parameters shown in Table 2 below;

General Recommendations for Application

  • PRIMER PLS must be applied uniformly without forming burrs and sagging;
  • after drying the treated surface should be rough and opaque so as to promote the subsequent layers bonding;
  • to determine the amount to be applied it is advisable to perform a preliminary test on a substrate small part.If needed, dilute as described in the next paragraph.
  • Poorly-Absorbent Surfaces and Dilution
  • On either poorly-absorbent substrates or concrete, the product can be pre-diluted before application in order to facilitate penetration. The diluent to be chosen is preferably odorless white spirit (dearomatized) and the dilution maximum proportions are 6 parts of PRIMER PLS with 4 parts white spirit. Do not exceed the maximum allowable dilution. To determine the proper dilution is good to proceed by trial finding the right balance between penetrating power and consolidating effect.

If the product is still fresh clean tools with either nitro thinner or white spirit or synthetic thinner.

  • Although nearly odorless, this product is harmful by inhalation.During application ensure adequate workplace ventilation and wear a respirator or a mask with organic vapor cartridge type A2 or ABEK2 in compliance with EN 141.
