Description

CEM-O-LUX is a coloured enamel consisting of non-yellowing thermoplastic resins dissolved in solvent and should be applied in two coats, PRIMER and FINISH.

When applied on cement surfaces, CEM-O-LUX forms a coloured decorative coating with the following features:

  • matt or semi-gloss;
  • high surface hardness;
  • firm bonding to the substrate;
  • water-repellent and resistant to oils and tyre marks;
  • applicable both indoors and outdoors.

CEM-O-LUX acts as impregnating and reinforcing agent for porous cement surfaces and as coloured dust seal.

 

CEM-O-LUX protects the cement surface against damaging factors, such as:

  • carbonation, by hindering diffusion of the carbon dioxide in the solid matrix;
  • scouring action of the rain;
  • corrosion, by limiting the penetration of degrading substances (chlorides and sulphates);
  • staining and adhesion of dirt in particular from grease, oils and tyres;
  • wear and abrasion.

Given the high speed of curing, the treatment with CEM-O-LUX is already rain resistant only 12 hours after application (at +30°C).

Usage field

  • cement pavements;
  • low walls and kerbs in cement;
  • private car parking areas.

Substrates preparation

(A) New flooring in industrial cement

Remove the dust in the normal manner and apply CEM-O-LUX PRIMER.

  • In particular cases a fine, more or less yellowed, detached film appears on the surface of concrete finished with quartz (industrial floor): this means that the floor has been (correctly) cured under a concrete-curing film applied wet-on-wet during laying. This film must be removed by scraping and/or sanding and washing with STRIPPER diluted 1:5 by volume with water, before applying CEM-O-LUX.

Roughen the surface with an acid wash using NORDECAL FORTE GEL, rinse and fully remove the washing liquid, taking care that no pools of liquid remain in the area to be treated.

Apply CEM-O-LUX PRIMER the next day.

  • If the removal of the curing compound and subsequent wash are carried out using a high-pressure water jet machine rather than sanding or an acid wash, wait at least one week (or in any case the time necessary for the surface to return to a uniform dry colour) before applying CEM-O-LUX PRIMER.

Cracks and joints (on new or old floors)

  • To seal a crack or a joint, use PLAST-EPO, which is a specific two-pack epoxy filler that must be mixed ready for immediate use. The crack must be enlarged using a small emery grinding wheel until it is approx. 1 cm deep, while the joint covering strips must be removed from the joints. Carefully remove all dust and then seal.

 

(B) Old flooring in industrial cement

  • Carry out an acid wash with NORDECAL FORTE GEL, rinse and fully remove the washing liquid, taking care that no pools of liquid remain in the area to be treated. Check that the substrate has become porous and only then proceed the next day to apply CEM-O-LUX.
  • If the substrate has not become porous, it must be rubbed down using a diamond grinding wheel before applying the product.

Holes and gaps

  • § When there are holes or gaps more than 1 cm thick to be made good, it is advisable to use MALTAFIX, which is a specific quick-setting product consisting of cements and filler.

The next day or 48 hours later at the most, the mortar will be ready for coating with CEM-O-LUX PRIMER.

 

(C) Sand and cement screeds or flooring

Remove the dust; if necessary sand before applying CEM-O-LUX PRIMER.

Surfaces to be reinforced

  • CEM-O-LUX PRIMER is normally sufficient to reinforce any poorly cohesive surface: there may, however, be cases in which the screed is non-cohesive all the way through.
  • To reinforce the substrate in depth, use a solvent-resistant medium pile roller to apply the single-pack CONSOLID PU with solvent, calculating an average coverage of 100-200 grams/sqm per 1 cm of thickness, avoiding a glossy film from forming on the surface. Wait approximately one week for the solvent to evaporate and then apply CEM-O-LUX PRIMER.

 

(D) Old coated flooring (intact treatment resistant to solvents)

Using a scraper ensure that the existing treatment adheres to the substrate and is sufficiently resistant to solvents by pouring a few drops of cellulose thinner on it and rubbing. The solvent must not have damaged the treatment, which is shown by the appearance of blistering, otherwise the procedure described under (E) must be followed.

Degrease using STRIPPER diluted 1:5 by volume with water; rinse and fully remove the remaining liquid, taking care that no pools of liquid remain in the area to be treated.

Apply CEM-O-LUX PRIMER the next day.

 

(E) Old concrete flooring already treated with products non-resistant to solvents

If the existing treatment has deteriorated, is poorly adherent or is not resistant to solvents (see par. D), it must be completely removed by mechanical means, such as rubbing down with single-brush equipment fitted with specific disk, which can be commonly hired on the market.

After rubbing down, remove the dust and proceed with the application of CEM-O-LUX PRIMER.

 

(F) Cement flooring subject to rising damp

Carry out an acid wash with NORDECAL FORTE GEL, rinse and fully remove the washing liquid, taking care that no pools of liquid remain in the area to be treated.

Wait one day before proceeding with work.

  • Alternatively, clean thoroughly using a high-pressure water jet machine and wait at least one week (or in any case the time necessary for the surface to return to a uniform dry colour) before continuing work.
  • Using a short pile roller for solvents, apply a coat of approx. 200 grams/sqm of NORDRY 200 P, taking care to apply well in areas that show traces of damp.
  • Once the solvent has evaporated from the surface (as a rough guide wait for 2 to 6 hours, but under no circumstances longer than 8 hours), apply CEM-O-LUX PRIMER.
Product application

(1) Application of CEM-O-LUX PRIMER

Before using CEM-O-LUX PRIMER it must be homogenised by shaking the closed tin vigorously for a few seconds or by thoroughly mixing it with a small spatula or other suitable tool until a homogeneous colour is obtained.

Apply the product using a short pile roller (25 cm), specific for solvents.

Pour CEM-O-LUX PRIMER directly over the substrate to be coated, run the roller over the primer three times crosswise and proceed in this way until the whole surface is covered. Make sure that the substrate is evenly impregnated and avoid pools of product forming.

If the product is used on small surface areas (low walls, kerbs in cement,…) CEM-O-LUX PRIMER may be applied with a bricklayer’s brush.

 

CEM-O-LUX PRIMER coverage: 120-130 g/m2.

Useful tips

After applying CEM-O-LUX PRIMER, only ventilate the premises after the surface has dried (the product film changes from a glossy to a matt finish): if the premises are ventilated prior to this, the ensuing fast evaporation of the solvent would not allow any bubbles that could have formed during application to be eliminated.


(2) Application of CEM-O-LUX FINITURA

Before using CEM-O-LUX FINITURA, homogenise the contents of the tin by shaking it vigorously for a few seconds or by thoroughly mixing the product with a small spatula or other suitable tool until a homogeneous colour is obtained.

Apply the product using a short pile roller (25 cm), specific for solvents.

Useful tips

(3) Protection of CEM-O-LUX with CEM WAX

In indoor applications we always recommend applying CEM WAX the very next day; this is a ready-to-use wax in aqueous emulsion (in bottle with practical spray top), which is highly scratch-resistant, has a semi-gloss effect and can be easily renewed. Application of this wax gives the freshly applied coating a longer life and makes it easier to clean.

Remove any dirt that may have settled during the wait using CEM CLEANER, an aqueous based alkaline detergent, diluted 1:5 by volume with water (1 litre of CEM CLEANER in 5 litres of water) and a multi-purpose cloth.

Rinse with water (lukewarm if possible), carefully remove any excess liquid and wait 1-2 hours for the surface to dry.

Coverage CEM CLEANER: 30-35 m2 pure product for each 1000 ml pack.

  • Application of wax

Spray CEM WAX directly onto the wax spreader and apply wax over the whole surface.

CEM WAX can be sprayed directly onto the surface only when the temperature is less than +20°C (at higher temperatures the wax could dry on the floor before it has been evenly spread with the wax spreader).

Coverage CEM WAX: 30-35 m2 for each 500 ml pack.

  • Curing of CEM WAX

The minimum times required for CEM WAX to be resistant to pedestrian and wheeled traffic depend on the temperature:

The time given above for the transit of vehicles (wheeled traffic) over CEM WAX obviously implies that the CEM-O-LUX is already resistant to wheeled traffic.

 

(4) Maintenance

Routine cleaning of CEM-O-LUX

  • Surfaces treated with CEM-O-LUX (and with CEM WAX) are cleaned using CEM CLEANER diluted 1:5 by volume in water (1 litre product in 5 litres water) and mop, multi-purpose cloth, industrial floor washer (also a washer-drier) or single-brush equipment with white Scotch Brite® disk.
  • Rinse with water (lukewarm if possible).

 

Coverage CEM CLEANER: 30-35 m2 pure product per 1000 ml pack.

  • Renewing the wax:

After routine cleaning the wax layer can be renewed with CEM WAX applied by wax spreader.

If the wax layer is badly damaged or stained, it may have to be removed and then reapplied.

  • Removal and reapplication of CEM WAX

Under no circumstances use solvent based dewaxers, which would damage CEM-O-LUX.

 

CEM WAX can be removed from the surface by dewaxing with STRIPPER PLUS diluted 1:6/1:8 by volume with lukewarm water:

  • pour the dewaxer over the surface and spread it evenly;
  • wait for 10 minutes;
  • then rub over the floor with a mop or with single-brush equipment fitted with white disk;
  • rinse with clean water;
  • when dry, apply CEM WAX again.

Warning and informations
  • The products CEM-O-LUX PRIMER and FINITURA are ready to use.
  • Shake the containers vigorously for a few seconds before opening.
  • The tools used to apply the product must be cleaned with cellulose thinner.
  • Do not apply if rain is imminent or forecast: protect CEM-O-LUX from rain in the first 12 hours with temperatures of +30°C and in the first 24 hours with temperatures of +5°C.
  • Do not apply with relative humidity of more than 85%.
  • For application the temperature must be at least 3°C above dew point and in any case more than +5°C.
  • Ventilate the rooms only after the product can be walked on.
  • The product is flammable and harmful to health; read the Safety Data Sheet before using it.
  • If the product is applied in closed environments with poor ventilation, it is advisable to use a half-mask with built-in interchangeable filters, using a universal filter of the type A1B1E1K1P3.
  • Store the product in a dry place, far from sources of heat and out of direct sunlight.
Preservation

CEM-O-LUX PRIMER e FINITURA: 24 months in original packaging, in a covered, dry place, at a temperature between +5°C and +30°C.
